College Basketball

If you’re feeling like a champ this morning. It’s championship week in college basketball. That means the different conference tournaments have begun in advance of the big March Madness tournament, which starts next week. Teams that win their conference championship earn an automatic bid into the tournament. The rest will have to sit and wait to hear their team name announced on Selection Sunday (March 11).

Who doesn’t love an underdog? The Lipscomb University Bisons won their conference tournament, which guarantees the team from a small university in Nashville a spot in the March Madness tournament for the first time ever. LIST OF TEAMS THAT HAVE QUALIFIED

Overtime

Kobe Bryant isn’t only one of the best in basketball, but he can now add one of the best in Hollywood to his list of accomplishments. Last night he took home an Oscar for his animated short Dear Basketball. He is the first professional athlete to win an Academy Award.

Sideline stat

In hopes of making a team, NFL (National Football League) hopefuls showed off their athletic and mental abilities to scouts in the NFL Combine. University of Central Florida’s Shaquem Griffin was not on the original invite list but the one-handed Griffin certainly made the best out of his appearance, dominating the Combine. Not only did he bench press 225 pounds an impressive 20 times using a prosthetic hand, he ran the fastest 40-yard dash for linebackers in 10 years. And with that, we have no excuse to skip the gym today.

Michelle Wie and Phil Mickelson are two of the biggest names in golf who have been down on their luck for years until this weekend. Wie ended a four-year losing streak by taking home a win on the last hole of the HSBC Women's World Championship in Singapore. Mickelson, 47, finally broke his five-year losing streak, winning the Mexico Championship this weekend.

NFL (National Football League)

Not a chance. Break out the participation trophies because after yesterday’s games, the dreams of making the playoffs died for the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants. At this point the Browns would probably be happy with winning one game this season, something they still haven’t done yet.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner. The winner of this weekend’s celebration dance goes to (drumroll please), the best team in the NFL - the Philadelphia Eagles. Even the players on the sideline took a break from playing tic-tac-toe to get in on this Electric Slide action.  

 

Overtime

After making their official debut during the 2017 Invictus Games, Prince Harry and his actress girlfriend Meghan Markle announced they are engaged. The Invictus Games are the mastermind of Prince Harry and honor wounded soldiers as they compete in athletic, Olympic-style events. More on the engagement.

Sideline stat

There were big upsets in college football this weekend including number one ranked Alabama losing to Auburn (#6). The Tiger fans were so excited they rushed the field to celebrate. Someone is always the party pooper and the school was fined $250,000 for allowing “access to competition area.” We’d say that’s money well spent. Don’t worry, the fans still carried on the tradition of toilet papering the trees on campus too.

Coaches’ corner

Things got weird in the recent college basketball game between Alabama (#25) vs. Minnesota (#14). The entire Alabama team, minus five players, were ejected from the game for their role in a bench clearing brawl. Then two of those players weren’t able to play, so Alabama finished the game with three players against Minnesota’s five (the number of players on the court according to the rule book) and they almost won.

Getting lei’d. While you are sitting at your desk dreaming of your Thanksgiving break, college basketball players are competing in one of the most prestigious tournaments, The Maui Invitational. As they ramp up their season, teams from all over the country say aloha to great basketball starting today. SCHEDULE

NFL (National Football League)

Fire away. The former home of the Atlanta Falcons, the Georgia Dome, was imploded this morning. Media everywhere is using the collapse to serve up jokes about the last year’s Super Bowl, where the Falcons blew a massive lead to the New England Patriots. VIDEO

Renew those passports. The New England Patriots said hola to a win, beating the Oakland Raiders in Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The NFL announced that teams will continue playing in Mexico City through 2021, furthering the NFL's efforts to expand their international market. To that, Patriots player Rob Gronkowski says, “Yo soy fiesta.” (He really did say that). INT'L COVERAGE

Tennis legend Serena Williams and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian were married in New Orleans last week. The star-studded guest list that included Beyonce and Eva Longoria, partied Big Easy style alongside the blushing bride, who wore three different dresses. WEDDING PICS

Not to be outdone by the celebration of the final race of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s career, Martin Truex Jr. took home his first NASCAR (National Association For Stock Car Auto Racing) championship yesterday. He tops off a pretty crappy year, which included a death of a crew member and his girlfriend’s battle with cancer, with the biggest win in NASCAR. MORE

Jay Cutler, Miami Dolphins quarterback and husband to reality TV star and shoe designer Kristin Cavallari, suffered a concussion yesterday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Cavallari took to social media to voice her displeasure for the violence of football. Cutler came out of retirement to play for the Dolphins. CHECK IT OUT.
