The Rundown: 5 Famous Athlete Dads And Their Equally Athletic Kids

In the spirit of Father’s Day this weekend (hint: buy dad a card now), we bring you five interesting and famous athlete fathers and their athlete children.

It’s all in the family,

The Last Night’s Game Team

Five Famous Athlete Dads And Their Equally Athletic Kids

  1. Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. became the first father-son duo to play in a MLB (Major League Baseball) game together. Griffey Jr. is a member of the Hall of Fame, but Griffey Sr. won two World Series rings. Griffey Jr.’s son Trey was drafted by the Seattle Mariners (MLB) but actually signed with the Indianapolis Colts (NFL – National Football League).
  2. NASCAR’s (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) dynamic duo was Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Earnhardt Jr. Papa Earnhardt's nickname was “The Intimidator” and he did just that with 76 career wins (his son has 26). He died from injuries sustained in a crash at the Daytona 500 at the age of 49. Earnhardt Jr. won that same race three years later in 2004. Earnhardt Jr.'s grandfather was also a NASCAR driver.
  3. Laila Ali had big shoes to fill when she followed in her dad’s footsteps. Her father was the one and only, the “World’s Greatest,” boxer Muhammed Ali. A boxing champion herself, she's also a television personality and fitness guru who has appeared on shows such as American Gladiator and Dancing With The Stars.
  4. Basketball greatness runs in the family for the newest NBA (National Basketball Association) Champion and two-time league MVP, Stephen Curry. His father Dell, is considered one of the best shooters of his time. Papa Curry is the all-time leader in points and three pointers for the Charlotte Hornets. Steph’s youngest brother Seth plays basketball for the Dallas Mavericks.
  5. You can’t have a list of famous fathers and their kids without mentioning the ultimate trio – the Manning crew. Dad, Archie Manning was a NFL (National Football League) quarterback for 15 years. His quarterback sons Peyton and Eli have both won two Super Bowls. Their third brother Cooper, is ‘only’ a partner in a law firm and a TV personality. What a group of slackers.

Overtime

  • Last year the Golden State Warriors had a record setting season but lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. This year, with one of the most explosive offensive teams ever, the Warriors redeemed themselves by beating the Cavaliers on Monday night to take home the NBA Championship.

Sideline stat

  • The Warriors celebrated their victory like champions by drinking massive bottles of champagne and racking up a $150,000 bill at a Bay Area nightclub. We’ll have what he’s having.

The Rundown: 5 Things To Know About America’s Cup

Raise your hand if you thought the America’s Cup was something you drank wine out of or maybe the trophy for a prized pig at the state fair? Well, the America’s Cup is actually a competitive high speed international sailing race that takes place every few years.

All aboard,

The Last Night's Game Team

Five Things To Know About America’s Cup

  1. America’s Cup started in 1851 in England (although Britain has never won) and is the world's oldest continuous sporting event. The teams are currently racing in Bermuda in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers & Challenger Playoffs with the winner taking on the previous champions, Oracle Team U.S.A., for the title starting next week.
  2. The team that wins the previous race chooses the location, format and the rules for the next race. (The 2013 race took place in San Francisco).
  3. The race is known as the “F1 on water” (Formula One racing). Why? The boats, which are propelled by the wind not engines, have massive engineering teams that use technology to push the limits of performance and aerodynamics, seeking top speeds (57 mph). The boats actually fly above the water which is called foiling. It raises out of the water onto hydrofoils to skim across the waves.
  4. It’s often referred to as the “Billionaire’s Death Race” because the cost of participating is so extravagant that only the wealthy can afford it. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is one of the main players. He spent $115 million for Oracle Team U.S.A. to successfully defend the 2013 title.
  5. The boat's crew of six train hard for this race utilizing logic puzzles, memory apps, boxing, free diving and even hostage training situations with Navy Seals. (Possibly preparing for pirates)?

Overtime

  • Racehorse Horsey McHorseface has won his first race in Australia. The name was inspired by the poll that chose Boaty McBoatface as the name for a research ship (the ship was never actually named that. Boo). The horse’s owner thought the name was funny and then said, “why not?”

Sideline stat

  • The NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals will resume tonight with the Golden State Warriors up 2-0 in the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. (This was the same situation the teams were in last year and the Cavs came back to win it all).

Tomorrow night the NHL (National Hockey League) Finals will take place in Pittsburgh where the series is all tied up between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Nashville Predators. We’ll see if a catfish makes another appearance. (Don’t know what we’re talking about, click here).

The Rundown: 5 Things To Know About The Adventures of the Stanley Cup

The NHL (National Hockey League) champions are crowned in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Stanley Cup is also the name of the trophy the winning team receives. After their win, every player on the championship team gets to spend a day with the Cup. Let’s see what sort of hilarious adventures the Cup has been on in its history.

It would make an amazing coffee mug,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PS – In case you’re out of the loop, the underdog Nashville Predators, whose captain is Mike Fisher aka Mr. Carrie Underwood, and the defending champions, Pittsburgh Penguins, play game two in the Stanley Cup Finals tonight.

5 Things To Know About The Adventures of the Stanley Cup

  1. While every player has a chance to spend the day with the trophy, there are no overnight dates in the fantasy suite. The Cup has a midnight curfew.
  2. The Cup, which has a it's own Twitter account and chaperone, has seen it all. It has been used as a baptismal font, left on the side of the road, gone fishing and spent some time in the sauna
  3. The Cup isn’t remade every year like most sports. The names of all members of the winning teams (including coaches and management) are etched into the trophy.
  4. The defending champs, the Pittsburgh Penguins, took the Cup around the world including to Russia, Sweden, Finland and Germany. There were mixed drinks consumed out of it and it held breakfast for both horses and a human.
  5. The Cup isn’t only for men. There are 12 women with their names inscribed on the trophy.

Overtime

  • Here's something to talk about over dinner tonight. A "dumb redneck with a bad idea" (his words not ours…) smuggled in a catfish into game one of the Stanely Cup Finals and threw it on the ice during the game - a Predators tradition since 2003. Getting the fish into the arena was a whole other story that involved running it over with his truck, mass amounts of Old Spice and a pair of compression shorts. Be prepared to laugh at this story.

Sideline Stat

  • Memorial Day baseball brought us a bench clearing brawl. San Francisco Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland hit Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper intentionally with a pitch which resulted in helmet and fist throwing excitement. MLB (Major League Baseball) announced that Harper will be suspended for four games and Strickland for six games. Both are appealing their suspension.
