5 Things To Know About The Mayweather vs. McGregor Fight

With over 50 million people projected to watch Saturday's fight in the U.S. alone, chances are you’ll cross paths with someone who will want to talk shop.

Always be prepared,

The Last Night’s Game Team

Five Things To Know About The Mayweather vs. McGregor Fight

  1. Why is this matchup such a big deal? This fight brings together champions from two different disciplines – Mayweather is a boxer (and this is a boxing match) and McGregor is a mixed martial artist from the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).

  2. Floyd “Money” Mayweather has a 49-0 boxing record. A win on Saturday will give him the best record in boxing at 50-0 and he’s already filed five trademarks for the phrase “50-0.” It’s rumored he could make upwards of $400 million for Saturday's fight.

  3. Experts think he doesn’t have a chance, but Irishman Conor McGregor has been dubbed “Mystic Mac” for making bold predictions and having them come true. The fighter, who made a record $3 million in a UFC fight, is predicted to make over $100 million for this fight. We’d let Mayweather punch us for that much too.

  4. Sharing the spotlight is the “Confident” Grammy nominated Demi Lovato, who will sing the national anthem. No word on the crooner for the Irish anthem but our fingers are crossed for Bono. Lastly, while Justin Bieber is one of Mayweather’s BFFs, don’t look for him ringside as they’ve reportedly had a falling out this week.

  5. The rules for the fight are strictly boxing rules. One exception is the weight of the gloves. (See the sideline stat below). What’s to stop McGregor from breaking out a martial arts move? Huge financial penalties and threats that Mayweather’s team will “sue him beyond belief.”

  • Where can I catch the fight? The match will stream live from Las Vegas on Pay-Per-View. There are also movie theaters across the country throwing watch parties. The main fight should take place closer to 11 pm EST.

  • If you’d like to place a bet, here are the odds. Oddly, they’re pretty comparable.

Overtime

  • Saddened by the violence, Spanish swimmer Fernando Alvarez wanted to pay tribute to the victims of the Barcelona attack at the Masters World Championships. Organizers told him no, so he observed his own moment of silence by standing on his platform for one minute after his race started. That’s a golden heart.

Sideline stat

  • Typically, UFC fighters fight with four ounce gloves and boxers fight with 10 ounce gloves, but the fighters won an appeal to change the glove weight to eight ounces for this match. This will make the punches more powerful.

Coaches’ corner

  • After weeks of speculation, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded Kyrie Irving away from LeBron James and to the Boston Celtics. Irving was traded for Isiah Thomas, who you might remember lost his sister in a car accident last year during the NBA (National Basketball Association) playoffs.

5 Things You Need To Know About Fantasy Football

Like driving through a puddle after a car wash, you can’t avoid fantasy football. Talk of leagues and drafts are omnipresent with the start of the football season around the corner. Now you can play a part in the conversation.

Boom!

Five Things You Need To Know About Fantasy Football

  1. The “sport” was originally developed in 1962 but modern fantasy football started in 1999 when Yahoo offered an online league.
  2. There are 59.3 million (!!) people who play fantasy football in the U.S. and Canada and over 34% of them are female. Who says football is for the boys?
  3. Picking a team name is the best part but remember no one is intimidated by the Football Fairy Princesses. Like naming a baby, there are massive lists of names out there to inspire you. Some of our favorites? Here’s my number, call me Brady, Sacks and the City and Game of Throws.
  4. Online betting sites like DraftKing and FanDuel bring in big bucks from fantasy football, but they are still illegal in a few states. Some states say fantasy football is a gambling while others say it’s a game of skill.
  5. Drafts, trades and researching game day opponents are all part of the game, hence why U.S. employers suffer a $17 billion (yes with a 'B') loss in productivity due to fantasy football.

Overtime

  • You can do your celebration dance because the 2017-18 NBA (National Basketball Association) schedule has been released. The Minnesota Timberwolves will travel further than any other team this season. Let's hope they embrace it like the St. Louis Cardinals (MLB – Major League Baseball) and hold a dance party on the plane.

Sideline stat

  • Everyone in the sports world is talking about Miami Marlins (MLB) slugger, Giancarlo Stanton. He’s on a hot streak, hitting home runs in six straight games AND setting a Marlins franchise record for home runs in a season, which is impressive because the season isn't even over for a month and a half.

Coaches’ corner

  • Dallas Cowboys' (NFL - National Football League) Ezekiel Elliott was hit with a six-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension was the result of a league investigation into an accusation of domestic violence. This week he filed an appeal, hoping to lower or even have the sentence dismissed. The hearing will take place a week before the season starts.

5 Of The Best Movie Cameos By Athletes

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard made a cameo in Sunday’s Game of Thrones and that sparked a debate over athletes whose side hustle is acting. We use the term actor lightly, but nonetheless they were in a movie, which is more than we can say.

Five of the best movie cameos by athletes

  1. Mike Tyson. The song In The Air Tonight will never be the same after the scene with renowned boxer Mike Tyson in The Hangover. Luckily for the wolf pack he didn’t bite anyone’s ear.
  2. Brett Farve. There was Something about Mary and Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Farve (NFL – National Football League) managed to figure that out and get the girl at the end. Kind of.
  3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Not many on this list had as pivotal of a role as NBA (National Basketball Association) legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1980 classic comedy, Airplane. As co-captain Murdock, he spent the movie denying that he was actually a basketball player. And don’t call me Shirley.
  4. Ronda Rousey. The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) champion was the love interest of Turtle in the Entourage movie. Even though she quite literally kicked his butt in the gym, he was still smitten.
  5. Lance Armstrong. The cyclist gives a game changing motivational speech to Vince Vaughn’s character after quitting the team. Lance Armstrong’s speech in Dodgeball now seems a bit awkward after the doping scandal including, “Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life.” We could think of a few other things he might regret.

Overtime

  • Parents and school administrators are cringing this morning after UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen, who is one of the best in college football, made a bold statement in an interview. He said, "Look, football and school don't go together. They just don't. Trying to do both is like trying to do two full-time jobs." Before you cry, he also said he wants to get his MBA so he can own the world when he's done with football. Life goals.

Sideline stat

  • The New England Patriots have outdone themselves. The Super Bowl champions are the first NFL team to purchase a plane for team travel. But wait there’s more. They bought a second plane as well because two planes are always better than one.

Coaches’ corner

  • Yesterday, ESPNU transformed to ESPN8: “The Ocho” and it was incredible. “The Ocho” was originally featured in the movie Dodgeball (see above) and this real-life version lived up to expectations. The one-day channel featured seldom seen sports like the World Darts Championship (think boxing match fanfare and tension but with darts) and sports we’ve never heard of like kabaddi, which is a full contact team game of tag that originated in India.
