Aloha champions. Providing their state with a much needed pick me up after Hurricane Lane, the team from Hawaii beat the South Korean team to claim the title of Little League Baseball World Series Champions. The Hawaiians and their opponents then engaged in an unusual series tradition, collecting a handful of infield dirt in baggies to commemorate their playing time. BRINGING SAND TO THE BEACH

Week one of college football starts this Thursday but the University of South Carolina Gamecocks are having to do a little extra cosmetic work before their season opener. This weekend’s Jay-Z and Beyoncé concert destroyed the turf, days before the team is scheduled to take the field. ALWAYS TIME FOR A LAST MINUTE FACE-LIFT
Sideline stat
Last season, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton led his team to a big victory over the Baltimore Ravens (NFL – National Football League). That win couldn’t save his Bengals postseason dreams but it allowed the Buffalo Bills to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. In gratitude, Bills fans donated $450,000 to Dalton’s charity. This weekend during his first game back in Buffalo, Dalton turned the tables and made a $450,000 donation to the Roswell Park Cancer Center in downtown Buffalo, earning him a standing ovation from the Bills' fans. Yesterday, The Players’ Tribune published an essay by Golden State Warriors’ (NBA – National Basketball Association) Steph Curry entitled “It’s Personal,” highlighting the need for gender equality. The NBA MVP is surrounded by women including his wife, Ayesha - a successful chef and restaurateur and two young daughters. Olympics
When you’ve had it up to here. The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) is laying the smackdown on U.S.A. Gymnastics (USAG). They gave the entire USAG board six days to resign or the federation will be decertified. The USOC stated that “Our position comes from a clear sense that the USAG culture needs fundamental rebuilding.” This comes on the heels of the sentencing of former USAG/Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar to 40-175 years for multiple sex crimes.
NFL (National Football League)
When you get a seat at the big kids' table. The best in the NFL will play this Sunday in the Pro Bowl (the NFL’s All-Star Game). While some players choose to opt out of playing in the game after a long season to avoid injury and players from the two Super Bowl teams (Patriots and Eagles) are ineligible to play, it's still a good game because there’s cash on the line. The players on the winning team take home a $64,000 check and the losers $32,000.
Overtime
Last night CBS hosted the Most Valuable Performer show, a talent show featuring NFL players. The winner was Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker who sang opera. He brought down the house with his rendition of Ave Maria, winning $50,000 for the charity of his choice, the Baltimore School For Arts. Unlike most of us, he could actually quit his day job. WATCH

A cool $1 million is on the line on Sunday. The NHL (National Hockey League) All-Star game isn’t one game but a three-on-three player tournament with the winning team splitting a $1 million prize.
Coaches’ Corner
Yesterday, Vince McMahon (yes that McMahon from WWE – Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment) announced he’s bringing back the XFL (Xtreme Football League). The XFL was around for one season in 2001 and for all intents and purposes, it was a joke. The league will be relaunched in 2020 and McMahon stressed that no one will be allowed to play if they have a criminal record, even a DUI - a switch from how the XFL was run before. As expected, Twitter had an absolute field day suggesting potential team names. If you’d like to know why this matters to you, let us explain.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Heartwarming Gesture. If you’re watching as Iowa hosts Penn State this weekend, make sure to keep your eyes peeled at the end of the first quarter. The Iowa Hawkeye fans have started a new tradition of waving to the children’s hospital that overlooks the stadium when the quarter ends (learn how that tradition started here).

NFL (NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE)
Early Alarm. The Baltimore Ravens and the Jacksonville Jaguars are heading across the pond this weekend to play a game in London. That means the game will start at 9:30am EST, more than three hours earlier than usual. Make sure to have your fantasy team lined up before then!
PGA (Professional Golfers Association)
Big Pay Day. The final leg of golf’s equivalent to playoffs concludes this Sunday in Atlanta. The winner of the FedEx Cup finals will take home $10 million and this sweet trophy! Scope out the top players here.
OVERTIME
Safety measures are being reassessed at MLB (Major League Baseball) ballparks after a scary incident at a Yankees' game. A toddler was struck with a foul ball and ended up in the hospital, so now many teams are considering bigger safety nets.

It’s a rematch this year for the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) finals. The Minnesota Lynx will face the defending champs, the Los Angeles Sparks, for a second consecutive year. Sunday begins the best-of-five series.

Sports history comes to the big screen this weekend. “Battle of the Sexes” depicts the legendary 1973 tennis match between top-ranked women’s player Billie Jean King (played by Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (played by Steve Carell), and there’s already a little Oscar buzz around it.
